Book Review
Phil Hellmuth, Jr is one of the most recognized faces of modern poker. He is the only player to have ever won eleven World Series of Poker bracelets, which are some of the most prestigious prizes in poker. Despite his poker achievements, Phil Hellmuth's personality is quite controversial and he is nicknamed the Poker Brat after the way he makes scathing remarks to his opponents when taking a bad beat. Phil has written a few books and there is no doubt that you should read at least one of them in order to familiarize yourself with the thoughts of one of the best poker players of the past twenty years.
In Play Poker Like the Pros, Phil Hellmuth reveals his approach to playing a few variations of poker, Limit & No-Limit Hold'em, Omaha & Pot-Limit Omaha and Seven-Card Stud. The book is designed for beginners or intermediate players who want a better understanding of a few poker variations in one book. One of Phil's skills that he emphasizes in the book is reading your opponent. His interesting breakdown of various players' styles includes the mouse who plays conservatively, the elephant who plays too many hands, the jackal who is crazy & unpredictable and the lion who is skilled & tough to beat. One method introduced in the book which has been largely followed in online poker rooms is the short stack strategy initially designed for beginners. Simply put, buy in for the minimum, fold most of the time and push allin with your premium hands. This is an effective and low-risk technique for learning no-limit holdem poker. This book is recommended if you want to read a quality introduction to a few poker variants. Phil Hellmuth provides an in depth exposition and every details has its place. This is not an advanced treatise, but an excellent poker primer. |
